The Documentary Letter of Credit is a common instrument for payment in international trade and one which is being emulated or replaced by new online systems. However, other payment systems are also common. Payment transactions may be as simple as cash on delivery or cheque. They can be on open account or by payment in advance. Electronic methods are emerging to handle all payment forms.
